FSC certification is considered the “gold standard” for wood sourced from responsibly managed forests that provide social, environmental, and economic benefits. When a product, such as wood flooring or furniture, carries an FSC Certified label, what does it actually mean? The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a non-profit organization that sets standards to ensure forestry practices remain environmentally responsible and socially beneficial. If a product, such as wooden furniture, carries an “FSC Certified” label, it means the wood materials and the manufacturer comply with the standards established by the FSC.
A product with an FSC label means the wood materials and manufacturer meet the requirements of the Forest Stewardship Council.
Why Should You Choose Furniture With FSC Certification?
According to the FSC, forests cover around 30% of the world’s land area. Therefore, consumers who care about green living and sustainable lifestyles should consider choosing furniture products with FSC certification. The United States remains one of the world’s largest importers of tropical wood products. Among these imports, outdoor furniture accounts for a significant share of the timber market. Over the past few decades, tropical timber imports have increased rapidly. Meanwhile, forests in countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brazil continue to disappear at an alarming rate.
If you look closely at milk cartons or juice packaging in supermarkets, you can often spot the FSC logo printed on the packaging of many brands.
One of the major causes of deforestation comes from legal and illegal logging activities that aim to satisfy growing global demand for tropical wood products. At the current rate of deforestation, many biodiverse forests in South America, Asia, and Africa may disappear within a decade. Experts encourage consumers to look for products carrying the Forest Stewardship Council logo. This label confirms that the wood comes from sustainably managed forests. Buying FSC-certified furniture helps support sustainable forest management, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and protect wildlife habitats.Jack Hurd, Director of the Forest Trade Program at The Nature Conservancy, shared:
“You can find the FSC tree-and-checkmark logo on many wood and paper products sold in office supply stores and home improvement retailers.”
In addition, he encourages consumers to ask their favorite retailers to provide FSC-certified products. A single hardwood furniture product may contribute to the destruction of valuable tropical forests if manufacturers source the timber irresponsibly, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Although tropical hardwood remains popular because of its beauty and durability, illegal logging activities still threaten many species. Therefore, choosing furniture with FSC certification helps support sustainable forestry while protecting the environment and reducing carbon emissions.
Meaning of FSC Certification Labels
Products with FSC certification allow consumers to trace the wood back to responsibly managed forests.
Look for products carrying FSC labels and, ideally, products crafted from FSC-certified wood such as oak or walnut sourced near the furniture manufacturing location. The FSC certification system may seem complex. However, consumers can easily identify products through three main FSC labels:
FSC 100%: Products use wood sourced entirely from FSC-certified forests.
FSC Recycled: The wood or paper materials come from recycled resources.
FSC Mixed: At least 70% of the wood materials come from FSC-certified or recycled sources, while the remaining 30% comes from controlled wood sources.
Search Products in the FSC Database
To help consumers identify sustainable products more easily, the FSC Global Certificate Database provides a product classification tool for researching certified companies, importers, exporters, and manufacturers. The system allows users to search by product category, certification status, company name, or country. For example, users can search for categories such as “outdoor furniture” or “veneer.” The database then displays company information, product descriptions, material origins, and certification details. As a result, consumers can verify whether a product still holds a valid FSC certification. Advanced search filters also help users refine searches for FSC-certified products. In addition, the Product Data tab provides more detailed information about the materials used in certified products.
